Wreckdiving Vrsar - Croatia 2009

Due to my experiences in 2008 I decided to reduced my diving activities to some of the fantastic wrecks in the Adriatic Sea. The marine life near the Istrian coast was dissapointing a year earlier and I tried one dive to spot some animals again. After this experience I enrolled on dives to the wrecks of the Baron Gautsch and the Hans Schmidt.

The Hans Schmidt was a large freighter which was built in Rotterdam in 1920. It’s First name was Albireo and owned by Van Nievelt, Goudriaan & Co Company from Rotterdam. The ship was sold in 1939 to German Heinrich Schmidt from Flensburg and renamed to Hans Schmidt. She sunk on January 24th 1943 near Pula. She rests at a depth of over 35 meters on the sea Floor. She’s broken in two parts. Divers should beware of the fishing nets in one can easily get stuck.

I also dived the Baron Gautsch again (First time 2008). If you like to know the history of this passenger steamer you can come to one of my lectures about this ship or read my book to be published in 2012.

I used the services of the Starfish Divecentre in Vrsar owned by Christoph and Lydia. For transporting up to 25 divers to the wrecks they use their 15 meters long Starfish. The ship is especially prepared for dive trips. A roomy cabin, toilet, awning and a big diving platform provide the divers with comfort and a relaxed preparation for the dive. Moreover the boat is equipped with sonic depth-finder, GPS satellite navigation, UHF-radio, 2 oxygen supply systems and an emergency first aid kit.
