In the spring of 1996 I flew to Crete. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island has a coastline of 1046 km with lots of opportunities to explore the underwater World. The area is known for it’s mammals like sperm whales, dolphins and porpoises and Sea turtles and Hammerhead sharks. I didn’t spotted any of these. In fact when I visited the island a few weeks before a Dutch diver almost died because of fishermen who used dynamite to catch fish and this fishing killed a lot of marine life.
Diving was not very common in the 90’s because the Greek government was very scared divers would take ancient amphoras from the dive sites. We visited a field of amphoras and a lot of ammunition lost by the Germans during the Second World War.
