Besides wreckdiving sharks are another passion of mine. It’s not common to spot sharks during dives in the Netherlands. Some lucky divers occasionally spot sharks of the Scyliorhinidae family but I never have. So it was for me an outstanding opportunity when I was asked to dive the aquarium of the Kijkduin fortress in Huisduinen. During our dive we were supposed to demonstrate some diving skills while sharks were swimming around us.
The construction of the tunnel shaped aquarium of the Kijkduin fortress is one of the most extraordinary in the world. The floor on wich visitors are standing is not only made of glass, but also runs over a meter of water underneath that’s part of the same aquarium. The tunnel is 15 metres long, 4.8 metres wide and has a water level of 4.5 metres. In total this aquarium contains 250.000 litres of saltwater!
I wrote an article of this sharkdive which was published in the 19th issue of Shark Diver Magazine. The publication also contained some photo’s I made during the dive.
