In the summer of 2011 I spent three weeks at the Spanish Costa Brava. L'Estartit is a small fishing town in the municipality of Torroella de Montgri. It’s situated where the rugged Montgri mountains meet the River Ter. It has around fifteen kilometers of rugged, rocky coastline, ideal for divers. It’s long beach makes it an ideal location for a family holiday.

The Medes Islands are sutuated less than one kilometer from the coast. It’s formed by a group of seven islands and rocky islets that make up the El Parc Natural del Montgrí les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter. The islands have a history as a refuge for pirates but today they are a protected nature reserve. Diving the Medes Islands is regulated by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Scuba divers can spot a biodiversity that has no equal in the Mediterranean area. Famous are the groupers who reached enormous dimensions. The rocky coastline offer divers a lot of underwater caves and caverns ready to explore.

Just like I did in 2010 I chose to use the services of the Aquatica Dive Center located on the Rifort camping site in the centre of L’Estartit. The centre is run by Miguel Coll, a PADI Course director and Eli Framis who’s a PADI Assistant Instructor and shipmaster. Divers are transported from the camping site to the port of L’Estartit with a van and trailer. There’s a maximum of 15 divers who can board on their ship to sail to one of the fantastic dive sites.

I enjoyed several dives and was allowed to dive independent to be able to shoot my photos of which some are used on this website.
